200 Access Students Participated in an International iEARN Holiday Card Exchange

December, 21 2015

Access Microscholarship Program Moldova has been collaborating with various schools and teachers from all over the world for a long time. This year, 140 Access students and alumni from Moldova (Edinet, Ribnita, Balti, Ungheni, Grigoriopol, Hincesti, Causeni, Anenii Noi, Vulcanesti, Taraclia and Soroca) had been involved in a very exciting project that they enjoyed a lot- the iEARN International Holiday Card Exchange. During the months of October- December 2015, they made creative cards for other 6 youth groups from 5 countries, namely  Belarus, Mexico, Spain,Thailand and Taiwan. One of our partners from Mexico came up with a wonderful idea for the students to write a short description of a national holiday in 2 languages- English and the native language of the authors, and this idea was put into practice.

The Access students from Moldova made beautiful handmade cards in which they described the Christmas and New Year traditions and customs of the Moldovan people. Their works crossed half of the globe to reach their recipients. In return, they received cards from Belarus, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan, describing the way the people from these countries celebrate Winter holidays as well as other national celebrations, such as El Dia de los Muertos or the King’s Day. The students were very surprised to see how creative their partners were, and by the wide variety of remarkable traditions there are in the world. They had the chance to see real Thai calligraphy which is extremely beautiful and totally different from what the students from Moldova are used to see.

This project was an absolute success since it not only gave the youth from different corners of the world the chance to speak about their countries and traditions, to practice English, and develop their artistic skills. The most important outcome is that these teenagers learned about the customs and traditions of other cultures, which is an exceptionally captivating topic which is also very important nowadays, especially in the context of Globalization.

We want to say a big Thank you to all our partners for sending a piece of their cultures to Moldova!
