70 Access students and alumni participated in the Access Youth Voice" Competition
December, 26 2015
The end of the year was very fruitful for the Access Microscholarship Program Moldova and all its members. On December, 26 a very exciting, unique and special event was organized- the National "Access Youth Voice" Competition, a contest that brought 70 Access students, alumni, teachers and teaching assistants together to show up tg the competencies they acquired within
the 6-week "Access Youth Voice" Project.
For the first time in the history of the program, the students had the chance to interact and compete against fellow groups from other regions. Therefore, 8 teams from Edinet, Balti, Ungheni, Ribnita, Hincesti, Grigoriopol, Causeni and a team of alumni from Bender, consisting of 5 students and their educators, came to Chisinau to represent their groups and to exhibit the skills and abilities acquired in the Access Program.
The contest consisted of several tasks. The teams began by introducing their team members in an original way, the name of the team and their slogan. Moreover, since Access is more than English, and because our students are active citizens of their communities who are constantly involved in civic engagement projects, the first task was to implement a community project that would benefit their region and present their results for the jury and the other participants. This was a very inspiring practice, given that the students didn't only talk about their achievements, but also discover many interesting and creative ideas that had been put into practice by their fellows from other regions.
After that, the contestants had to exhibit their public speech skills, expressing their point of view regarding bullying in schools in a 2-minute persuasive speech.
The participants also displayed real talent and speed in building 3D puzzles with U.S. buildings. In addition to that, they revealed their deep knowledge of American culture, competing in an enthusiastic and captivating Jeopardy game.
The performance of the 8 teams in all these stages was evaluated by a jury committee consisting of Peace Corps volunteers, former and present Access teachers, and FLEX alumni. After a long day and an eager and inspirational struggle, the teams that performed best in the contest were announced:
1st Place- Ungheni
2nd place- Causeni
3rd place- Edinet
Honorable Mention- Ribnita.
Despite all the worries the contestants went through, they had a lot of fun, having the chance to make new friends, see the teachers and companions they worked with in the summer camp and present the results of the efforts they put into their projects to people from different parts of this country.
All the participants received prizes specially chosen to inflame their love for the English language and American culture. They got books with English and American literature, as well as UNO cards that will definitely be useful in making the cold winter days more exciting.
Congratulations to all the winners and a big THANK YOU for all the Access students and alumni who got involved for their enthusiasm, creativity, inspiration, involvement and hard work.
